The ranch my dad grew up on is actually about 20 minutes north of Bishop CA on highway 6.
Bishop is in the Owen's valley. It's a deep valley between the Yosemite National Park and the Nevada line. The CA-NV border actually goes through those mountains.
The land around there is absolutely beautiful. There are natural wonders every where you go. Mono Lake is about 90 minutes north-west on highway 395. Death valley and Sequoia National park stradle the valley to the south. For those who don't know, Death valley is known as the hottest place on Earth, and Sequoia National park has the big gigantron redwood trees - like 300ft tall and 30ft wide. Those parks are about an hour away. Check out this map...

Then look at this one and you can see where it is in relation to the rest of the State.

On this map, the Owen's valley is the green and brown patch just south west of Nevada.
In the 1950's when dad was a teenager, they used to test atomic bombs on the other side of the mountain range (in the Nevada desert). He said once while he was milking the cows in the early AM he thought the sun had come up over the White mountains, but then the real sun came up 10 minutes later.
wow. gorgeous.

Wow, that is beautiful. Is that anywhere near Simi, where Reagan is buried? (sorry to show my ignorance of Californian geography!)
Posted by teahouseblossom at June 12, 2004 04:22 PMI don't know the geography of that area, either. My husband's dad took the photos. I'll find out.
