On a side note, this is making me giggle.

'"Hikers lose reality about the cows. They don't know how to react when a cow appears," Zaugg said.

If approached by a cow, the hiking association recommends that walkers remain calm and slowly leave the area without turning their backs on the animal.'

In other cow news, cows in Somerset are mooing with distinct accents.

Daycare

Since a lot of people have asked how the Snophinator is doing in daycare, I thought I'd give you an update.

She seems to like it when she's there. This is now week 2 and it might be sinking in that this is going to be the routine for a while.

She apparently doesn't fuss (much) while she's there but she's also pretty silent. Then she gets home and doesn't stop chattering until she falls asleep. It's like she holds it in all day and then has to release all her thoughts once she's home. She is also having panic attacks when I come to pick her up. At first I thought it was because she wanted to stay and play with the other kids. And I think this was true the first couple of days. Now I think she's a little anxious all day and then she sees me and she's tired and hungry and pissed that I left her all day. So I spend some time with her in the back of the car and she's all fine and maybe a bit more clingy than usual and then the instant I try to strap her in the carseat it's a nightmare. Loud crying and yelling and hysteria. Like maybe she's afraid that by walking around the car to drive home, I'm abandoning her again. My heart breaks into little tiny pieces on the way home. I try to calmly explain that we're going home, Daddy's at home and Otto's at home and Tabitha's at home and it's just a short drive and everything is okay and I know she's mad at me but now I'm here and we're going home. I had to ask Aaron to pick her up today because I'm not sure my heart can take it.

Besides that, there are a few things bugging me at the moment: she's only eating a little bit of table food when she's there. So, depending on what time Aaron drops her off, she only eats a little bit of food between 9ish and 4. Hopefully once she starts to realize that this is going to be the routine, she'll start to eat more. DCL (daycare lady) can't get her to eat the baby food we've provided even though she still eats it at home. She *is* more interested in what we're eating so when we are trying to get her to eat her baby food, we pretend we're eating it as well and that tends to work. I mentioned this to DCL but I didn't really get a response. Aaron thinks she is too busy with the other kids to focus so much energy on feeding one of them. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Sophie does eat table food with us but she's much more picky about it. She's healthy and fine and she isn't starving, but it still bugs me that she's not eating. I could never last that long without more food. I think low blood sugar is part of the panic attack equation as well.

Spaghetti Monster

The other thing is that she's only taking very short naps. So again, depending on what time Aaron drops her off, because some days he can get her to take a nap before he drops her off, she's taking only a 30 minute or 45 minute nap. That's it. For the whole day. On weekends, she averages about 2 hours of naps a day. Her little brain needs more rest than that. DCL tries, but Sophie is too wound up, I think, by the presence of the other kids. I'm hoping this works itself out, too. That she'll realize that tired = sleep. This lack of sleep is another part of the panic attack equation. (can you tell I'm married to a mathematician?)

She does seem to like the other kids. And DCL is a gentle, caring woman. It's a good environment for Sophie. I'm hoping she gets used to the routine soon.

Everyone warned me about her having panic attacks when we drop her off. She doesn't have those. Why didn't I know about the crying when I picked her up? I am not prepared for this.

Hygiene in Hospitals

Alarming story from the London Times (via Blogging Baby) about hygiene in hospitals. Particularly frightening and just plain stupid, if you ask me, is that doctors were the worst offenders of not washing their hands before seeing patients. Also, that the Staphyloccus bacteria was present on bed tables (from which patients eat), lockers and telephones. Yuck.

Lockheed Martin/Coast Guard

When I think of YouTube, I think of videos of bunnies humping and adorable little babies jumping and squealing.

But this man has taken things to a whole other level - he's using YouTube to make his case against the US government. He's an engineer working for Lockheed Martin and he's tried many other avenues of getting information out about critical security flaws in a fleet of Coast Guard boats.

Whether or not his allegations are true, it's a very interesting use of the medium. I'm hoping more whistleblowers follow his lead.

Grocery Game

Now that we are trying to be honest about budgeting and saving for an eventual house, I've been looking around them thar internets for tips on budgeting, etc. One of my favorite sites (and people) is Amanda at The Naked Ledger. She was recently asking for budgeting tips and one of the tips was for The Grocery Game*.

I skeptically signed up for the $1 month trial thinking, eh, $1 is not a lot if this is bogus. I also bought the Sunday paper with all the coupons for $1.50.

We just got back from Stop & Shop. What would normally have cost us $106.07, cost us....get this....are you ready? $57.38. That is a savings of 46%! Huge! And that's without really trying! It helps that S&S offers double coupons and such, but even that only added about $3 to the total savings.

W00t!

I warned Aaron that now I'm going to become a crazy coupon lady.

*I also found Ninja Poodles and Cheaper Than Therapy through Amanda's site and they always have lots of tips on ways to save. Good stuff. Now I'm feeling the competitive juices.

Update: I forgot to mention that Cheaper Than Therapy (Attila the Mom) has her own crash course that is extremely informative. I've linked to Part 4 of the series as it contains the links to Parts 1 - 3. Belinda from Ninja Poodles references this in the comments. Attila had a couple of shopping trips where the savings were in the 90+% savings range. Amazing.

10 Months!

Oh, Sophie, Sophie, Sophie. You are a wonderful little girl. I turned my back for a second and all of a sudden you looked less like a baby and more like a toddler.

What happened to my baby?!?

You are hilarious. Period. Even when we are frustrated because you are so obviously very tired and yet you just won't let yourself sleep, you will do something so utterly adorable that we can't help but smother you in kisses. Because that is you. Adorable.

Blowing zerberts on her toy fish

And then there is the undeniable fact that you are smart. You recognize signs like "milk" and "kitty cat" and "eat" and probably others but you are not letting on because then you would be showing your hand. You recognize words like "doggy" and "Daddy" and "Mommy" and "Grandma" and "Otto" and "kitty cat" and "binky" and "bath" and "belly button" and, just today, "tractor" and "cow". You even said "Otto". It sounded more like "Aw Oh" but it was very understandable. This is going to count as your first word.

You are minutes from walking. Although we've been saying that for a while. You can stand without touching anything but then you realize what you are doing and you quickly sit down. You will walk your way around furniture and along the walls but you won't take any steps if we try and hold your hands to help you. You crawl like a maniac and you occasionally bump into things like the glass door at Grandma's because you are fascinated with looking at your hands when you crawl.

On the move

Tongue, in motion

This month saw the introduction of 3 new teeth. The two top, front ones and one more on the bottom. Daddy thinks he spied a molar at one point, but there has not been confirmation of this. We are both a little wary of putting our fingers in your bitey mouth to check.

This week was also your introduction to daycare. You seem to love this so far. You have been quite upset when we've come to pick you up. Which is great, because we're happy you like it, but sad because we want you to miss us. Just a little. We're so happy that you are independent and a social butterfly. I will probably regret writing that when you are a teenager, but for now it's true.

We love you so very much.

Daycare

Today another milestone was reached. Sophie spent the whole day at daycare without us. Aaron dropped her off in the morning and apparently as soon as he set her down, she didn't look back. Our daycare provider sent photos to me at noon to show how well Sophie was handling things. No melt-downs, no fussing while there. At least while she was awake and occupied. There was apparently some issues with getting her to take a nap but I'm sure it will be easier as she gets more used to things. She had a complete melt-down at the end of the day when I tried to strap her in the car seat. She kept gesturing toward the daycare house and making pleating "uuuh" noises and then starting crying when I strapped her in. All in all, though, I'd say it was a good day.

She looks really upset that we're not there:

Fair Days

This weekend was one of the local fairs. My dad collects/covets/stockpiles/hoardes antique tractors. Which he uses to pull heavy sleds of concrete weights. Since this fair was fairly close to their house, he decided to bring 7 heavily weighted tractors down to the tractor pull on Sunday. And he needed Aaron's help. Also, my sister and her two kids were in town to partake of the fair. She brought her camera; mine stayed in the car.

These are some of her great photos of Sophie. There are other, gorgeous photos of her kids but I'm not sure if she wants me to upload them to the internets. (K?)

Sophie Saturday!

Monday is the first day of full-time daycare for the Snoph. This makes me sad. She will probably love it and everything, but it's just depressing that someone else gets to spend all day with her.

She's in a fantastic stage at the moment. Very happy and very interactive and very, very funny. Despite the fact that she has at least 3 new teeth and probably has the cold about which Aaron and I have been whining for the whole week.

I mean, just look at this baby! Wouldn't you like to spend all day with her?

She spends lots of time like this.

Liquid Explosives Detection Possible

Guess what? The technology to determine whether that jar of baby food or that bottle of water contains explosives has been around since the '90s.

Okay, I'll let that sink in for a minute.

Also, the White House and the Supreme Court are using this technology right now to make sure no one makes it inside with explosives.

I'm so happy they are being protected and not everyone else in the country flying on airplanes.

Do you know what it comes down to? They didn't leave enough money in the budget to protect you and me. Tax cuts for the very rich? Check. Extremely expensive, preemptive war in Iraq? Check. Protect US citizens on our home turf? Uh, maybe tomorrow.

Aren't you glad you threw out your lipstick?

Because the cargo beneath your feet is not being inspected. So reassuring.

Also, you know how you've been taking your shoes off to get through airport security? Yeah, the x-rays don't detect explosives.

I'm so happy that billions and billions of dollars are being diverted to Iraq and not to airport and travel security. Literally. More than $55 million was diverted away from research and development on liquid explosives.

And another thing, Britain wanted to continue their investigations but Bush pushed them to make public arrests. So the investigations ended. The alleged bombers didn't have plane tickets. Most of them didn't even have passports. Sounds imminent to me. There's no way this was politically motivated.

Oh Weekend, Where Art Thou?

Wow, I feel like I had a huge hand on my back, shoving me through the weekend. We did get some things done, but time seemed to fly by and when the alarm went off this morning at 5:30, I had to take a few moments to realize that it was Monday already.

I baked a ton of cookies, we went to Target to return some software and get me a couple of bras because that whole drawer-full of bras from before Sophie (or B.S. as we call it around these parts)? Uh, they don't fit. I have loads of cute 34Bs that I will most likely never get these puppies into again. And the 34Cs don't fit at the moment, either (those were purchased while I was pregnant and the 34Bs were getting obscene). I'm wearing a 34D at the moment. Which is frightening and also extremely cool.

We're all good, just a little whiplashed from the speed of the weekend. Aaron's coming down with something - scratchy throat, head ache. Sophie's been a bit stuffed up as well. She sounds like a little rhinocerous at night - snorting and snuffling.

Sorry no photos on Saturday. I'll hopefully be able to get some up tonight.

Another update: CODE RED

So, if all the stuff they are confiscating at the airport could possibly be EXPLOSIVE MATERIAL, why are they giving it away to the homeless and selling it on eBay after taking it from you? Because this is all complete B.S.

Lest we forget, the Bush Administration tried to take money AWAY from explosives detection at the airports.

This is called "wagging the dog".

Yes, Nixon:

"Never has so much military and economic and diplomatic power been used so ineffectively, and if after all of this time, and all of this sacrifice, and all of this support, there is still no end in sight, then I say the time has come for the American people to turn to new leadership not tied to the mistakes and policies of the past."

Tagged!

Just to show you how behind I am in my reading, I just this morning found out that Jenn tagged me for a meme! in March!

So, here goes:

Accent: I'd like to think I don't have an accent as I've lived all over the country. I do pick up accents when I've been drinking.

Booze of Choice: hmm. Currently, I'm still nursing, so the only alcohol I have is the occasional dark beer. That said, I do like a good dirty vodka martini or a whiskey high ball or a yummy gin and tonic. Or a yummy Silver Patron margarita with lime juice. I'm also partial to super-spicy Bloody Marys. But only in the morning. After a long night.

Chores I Hate: HA! Where to begin? I hate folding and ironing clothes, cleaning the toilet, emptying the dishwasher (just ask Aaron) and scrubbing the bathtub. I don't mind putting clothes into the washing machine/dryer or putting dishes into the dishwasher. I just hate the follow through. This does not mean that I'm not completely opinionated about how these chores are done, though.

Dog or Cat: my dad's a vet, so we've had everything under the sun at some point. Currently we have two cats. I'm not sure if we'd ever get a dog even though I tease Aaron all the time about getting a bulldog because I love them. I can also see getting an Irish Wolfhound at some point because Aaron looks like one when he wakes up in the morning.

Essential Electronics: computer - I'm an email junkie. I even check work email before I go to bed. Also, our digital camera even though it's not the best, I still love the instant gratification of digital photography.

Favorite Perfume: Coco by Chanel. I also have a really pretty Pikake Jasmine oil I bought in Hawaii. A coworker wears Giorgio and every time she walks by it is just wonderful. It would probably smell horrible on me. I have a weird pH, I've decided. On a side note, I can't find a deodorant that will last the entire day. Every night I end up smelling like I sat in a pot of curry all day. Fermented curry.

Gold or Silver: silver. Or platinum. I loathe gold.

Hometown: a tiny little town in Massachusetts that is barely on the map.

Insomnia: only sometimes. Mostly, I have disturbing dreams.

Job Title(s): currently Marketing Specialist.

Kids: one lovely little girl named Sophie.

Living Arrangements: we rent an old Victorian house. "We" is me, my husband, Aaron, our cats Otto and Tabitha and a little monkey named Sophie. Oh, and some ENORMOUS spiders.

Most Admired Trait: mine, or in someone else? I admire honesty and generosity in other people. I also really, really admire and seek out funny people.

Overnight Hospital Stays: the only one I remember is being in the hospital after having Sophie. I may have been hospitalized as a kid with bronchitis. The details are fuzzy.

Phobia(s): I'm apparently terrified of ENORMOUS spiders. On paper, I understand that these monsters are "good" and "helpful" but then I see them in person and my mind completely shuts down and ice water fills my veins.

Quote: a quote that I tend to fall back on: "You only live once in this body."

Religion: I was raised Protestant but neither Aaron and I subscribe to a particular religion. I have a hard time understanding how some people get so fanatical about their own faith.

Siblings: two sisters (one older; one younger) and an older brother. We're all still close. Even all the "others" get along.

Time(s) I Wake Up: I used to like to sleep in a bit. HA HA HA! I can't even remember what that was like. On a good day, Sophie sleeps until about 6:30. She's still also waking up a couple of times a night. That's okay, I'm a restless sleeper as well. So is Aaron.

Unusual Talent/Skill: I'm proud of making people shoot their drinks out their noses with laughter. I live for those moments. I can also suck my top lip into my nostrils.

Veggies I Refuse to Eat: I eat most veggies. I refuse to eat some things because of the way they are prepared.

Worst Habit: Aaron would probably say my constant nagging about the "right" way to do things. To that, I say "Shut up and reload the dishwasher because you did it wrong."

Yummiest Food I Make: I make killer cheesecakes and peanut butter chocolate chunk cookies and chocolately cakes.

Zodiac Sign: Scorpio. Clearly the best sign in the Zodiac.

I tag Erin and Mia.

Lame Duck of Destruction

Powerful article about Bush's only veto in office: against stem cell research, of all things.

"Sadly, illogically and wickedly, Bush means to preserve only the lives of those Americans who cannot speak, cannot move, and cannot think. This intent is evidenced by federal legislation Bush supported that was passed to preserve the comatose life of a single individual in a single state – one of 300 million Americans, as well as in his recent veto to preserve several hundred embryos stored in freezers across the country.

If you can speak and move, as can Iraqis and Afghans, and you oppose the puppet governments and occupation armies the American military have imposed, then your lives are not worth preserving, or protecting.

If you can think, like Army Lt Ehren Watadi, who opposes the illegal invasion and occupation in Iraq upon that basis, your life and freedom is not worthy of preservation.

If you can think, and God forbid, have a truly Christian set of ethics, you will be jailed, tarnished as an enemy of the state, and threatened. SSgt Kevin Benderman is living proof of this Bush Administration interpretation of the duty to preserve life.

If you can think, and believe that you have certain unalienable rights to your homes, land, security and choice of political leaders, as do most Palestinians, you simply don't count."

Oh wait, no one cares what I had for lunch.

Snaggle Toof!

We discovered that Sophie has two new teefers poking through her sore gums! This makes the total now 4. Three on the bottom and one on the top. There may be more but we are afraid to stick our fingers in there to check. Perhaps she was actually teething.

Her latest wacky development is the full-fledged zerbert on any available fleshy surface. Preferably, for her, on my stomach. When she manages a really loud realistic fart sound, she'll look up at me for approval. I flush with pride and cheer her on. I'm sure she's going to be a hit at daycare.

9-month doctor's appointment

For those keeping track, we just got back from Sophie's 9-month doctor's appointment. No shots this time, thank goodness.

She's 20 pounds, 1 oz and 28.5" tall/long. She's now in the 75th percentile for both. As Aaron said: "Um, Sophie, that's technically a 'C' grade - so you'd better start eating more."

Her belly button area was still a little moist in the crevices. And then when the doctor was looking at it with the Q-tip, it started to get smelly. Or he opened up the stink by poking at it. Either way, he took a culture of it and told us to put some rubbing alcohol on it. If it comes back with pathogenic properties, he'll call us.

Next appointment is at one year.

It feels like a Saturday to me. It was absolutely pouring when we left the house and now it's just gray and drizzly. We are going to feed Sophie and then bring her to daycare where she will stay for an hour by herself so that DCL (daycare lady) can see what she is like without her parents.

Later this afternoon, I'll be heading out to have my suspicious moles investigated.

Yes, I know

Still no photos. It is seriously too hot when I get home to try and sweat buckets in front of the computer to upload anything for you. So, you are just going to have to wait.

I'm almost finished with my August swap package. This will be my last one for a while. The color theme this time is rainbow. Not my favorite, but surprisingly easy to do.

Tomorrow is Sophie's 9-month pediatrician appointment. It will be interesting to see how much bigger she is. She is one solid chunk of love. Although this heat is making her quite cranky and she's eating very little solid food. This development is great for my cleavage but not so great for daycare if it continues. Daycare is starting in two weeks. I still have a lot of frozen milk stored but it isn't going to last me through the full year and I've already handed off the pump to my younger sister. If she would eat solids during the day, she does get a lot of milk once I'm home. We're going to ask the pediatrician if this is enough. Especially once we phase out the day bottle of milk. I don't want to supplement with formula because I'm not having issues with breastfeeding. So, if he suggests she still needs milk during the day then I'm going to rent a pump to carry us through the year.

Way more than you wanted to know, eh?

I'm also going to a dermatologist tomorrow to have my moles checked. I have some suspicious ones on my back and neck and one on my leg and I don't trust my family doctor in looking at them for possible skin cancer. For the last 10 years or more, I've been very good about using sunscreen - instead of moisturizer, I use SPF45 on my face and chest and 55 everywhere else. However, as a teenager, I was the one laying out covered in baby oil. You couldn't get me to wear anything more than SPF4. I shudder at the thought now.

Sold!

Aaron's miniature army sold for $500! That's excellent news. He is a little sad that it is going, but he's moved on from the Space Wolves and is expanding his German army for an entirely different game.

In other news, the heat index here hit 105° today. While the temperature was about 95°, the humidity added another 10°.

It certainly feels like it. It's hazy and the air is very thick. I need a canoe paddle to work my way through the house.

I'm still working on the bazaar site. I want to make sure all the PayPal shopping cart stuff is in place before I launch anything. Also, I program things when I'm home and I have limited time after Sophie goes to bed and before I melt into a puddle to do anything. But stay tuned! It's looking pretty good.
